Background: Depletion of the endogenous antioxidant, glutathione (GSH), underlies progression of the devastating neurodegenerative disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Thus, strategies aimed at elevating GSH may yield new therapeutics for ALS.
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is also known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’, a devastating neurodegenerative process that degrades muscle function and leads to eventual paralysis. Mice suffering from a similar disease are used in the laboratory to explore possible treatments for humans.
